JUNIORS TRAVEL UPTOWN: AN EXTRAORDINARY VISIT TO YESHIVA UNIVERSITY

The junior class went to Yeshiva University’s uptown campus to participate in their annual Jewish book sale.  This sale, which is run by the students of Yeshiva, boasts the largest selection of Jewish books in the New York area.  Our students took advantage of this opportunity and purchased various books to enhance their studies.

The students had the distinguished opportunity of being addressed by Mr. Richard Joel, president of Yeshiva University. President Joel offered us a glimpse into the vision of YU and how its philosophy of Torah U’mada should be implemented in today’s society.  After sharing his conflict in regard to that evening’s basketball game between Ramaz and MTA, he shared his unique perspective on American college life for Jews.  He drew from his experience as director of Hillel as well as from his current position at YU. President Joel is also the father of Rabbi Avery Joel, a favorite Talmud teacher at Ramaz.

Rabbi Daniel Feldman, who is a noted author, congregational Rabbi, and teacher at YU spoke briefly and described the themes of his most recent book, “The Right and the Good: Halakhah and Human Relations.” His book, eloquently written in English, explores the Jewish legal categories that govern interpersonal relationships, such as “cutting” someone else in line and embarrassing other people.

The class also visited the main Beit Midrash of Yeshiva University where they saw hundreds of students studying Talmud in preparation for their morning classes.

Everyone enjoyed delicious lunches at the various kosher eateries on the campus, where many of our students were excited to meet up with their friends and siblings.
