“The Power of One” -- "היחיד וכוחו" was the theme of this year’s Ramaz-Flatbush Freshman Seminar; it is a concept cherished by the Jewish people and is exhibited by many biblical and modern day heroes and heroines. Despite the turmoil in our world, it has always been the Jewish way to persevere using the strength and beauty of our heritage to better ourselves and the world around us. This theme was integrated throughout seminar’s sessions and programs.
It is quite amazing to see more than two hundred freshmen together with over eighty senior advisers, twelve alumni and thirty faculty and administrators joining to celebrate Shabbat. Seminar’s magic is impossible to duplicate; the ruach that permeates is hard to describe.
This unique environment encourages students to discuss issues relating to their own personal development, to grapple with the tensions they feel when challenged to observe difficult halakhot, to listen to speakers whose personal stories are awe-inspiring, to laugh at the seniors as they star in their skits and to sing or dance or rap with their advisers and teachers late at night. Students and faculty establish new relationships and forge strong bonds because of the unique setting that seminar provides.
A special ya’sher koach to our phenomenal Senior Head Advisers, Amanda Sugarman and Yehuda Lerea!
