“Gevurah can be taken one step away from the national level and brought to the lives of individuals,” Rabbi Rubin noted in his opening remarks to our students at a school-wide Chanukah program. The Rabbi was preparing our students for an extraordinary meeting with Yossi Samuels, a young man whose life-experiences as a severely handicapped person are inspirational, if not miraculous. Yossi visited Ramaz along with his brother Avi and his father Rabbi Kalman Samuels after having met with President Bush at the White House Chanukah lighting ceremony.
To help our students understand Yossi’s challenges, the program began with an edited version of the film “About Yossi.” Rabbi Samuels wanted our students to know that Yossi has goals and strives each day to achieve them and that “Yossi is really a lot like you and me: A valuable human being, trying to make a powerful difference in the world around him.”
Yossi’s marvelous sense of humor and warm and welcoming nature inspired our students. It was quite an emotional moment when Yossi “told” our students how much he appreciated his visit at Ramaz.
