These past few weeks have been fraught with tensions and worry as the war in Gaza continues. To help understand the situation, we were fortunate to have Dr. Daniel Polisar, one of the founders and president of the renowned Shalem Institute in Israel, speak to the entire student body. His knowledge and intellectual analysis of the situation enabled us to appreciate the intricacies and complexities of “Cast Lead” Dr. Polisar explained that, “This is not a small battle over 140 square miles, the Gaza strip, but this is a strategic battle for the Middle East and that’s why Israel had to fight.”
Please click on “Crisis in Gaza” to listen to Dr. Polisar and to view the two short film clips that were shown in the program: “Hamas’ Escalation to Confrontation” and the Hebrew film, “Kulanu B’Yachad.”
Rabbi Uzi Beer of the Tanakh department closed the program by sharing a few of his personal experiences as a soldier in Tzahal. He charged us to find ways to help, each according to his/her own style. When you listen to the Rabbi’s remarks, you too will find his message extremely inspiring.
Students were given a card with the name of a chayal or chayelet who is now serving in the IDF and were asked to think of that soldier during Tefilah or when doing any mitzvah. Our tzedakah and chesed committees have started a campaign, “Chai for a Chayal.” With the monies raised we have purchased fleece blankets, thermal underwear and beanie hats, items specifically requested by our contacts in Israel. Several filled duffle bags have already been sent with parents who left for Israel this past week. IF YOU ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO JERUSALEM, please notify us. Only by sending the filled duffle bags with travelers do we best fulfill this mission.
Thank you for contributing to “Chai for a Chayal” and for sending in the discount coupons to “Bed Bath & Beyond.”
